Dehydration caused by diarrhea is one of the most common problems of infancy and early childhood. Kids feel weak and "run down".
Why? Because vital body fluids and minerals are lost during diarrhea. These fluids and minerals contain electrolytes. They must be replaced quickly in order to prevent dehydration.
Dehydration affects the body's electrolyte balance. When electrolytes are out of balance, many organs cannot function properly. Parents should also remember that Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) will not stop the diarrhea. This will continue until the illness has run its course. However: if a child is keeping some rehydration fluid down, the chances of dehydration are greatly reduced.
Children under the age of five are especially vulnerable to becoming dehydrated by a bout of diarrhea. Their bodies are small and it doesn't take much fluid loss to put their electrolytes out of balance.
Bottom line: Diarrhea isn't fun. And dehydration can be dangerous.
Because dehydration is preventable.
Only a physician can accurately diagnose dehydration, but parents can watch for some obvious signs, such as:
- dry mouth
- extreme thirst
- sunken eyes
- no tears when crying
- decreased urination
- fussiness
- weakness
- skin that stays compressed when pinched
- fever without perspiration
The management of diarrhea should begin at home. Effective early intervention is the key to preventing dehydration. Physicians and other health professionals recommend Pediatric Electrolyte for infants and small children as a preventative measure at the first sign of a bout of diarrhea.
- At the onset of a bout of diarrhea, give your child Pediatric Electrolyte. This will restore the fluid and salts that are lost with the diarrhea back into your child's body./li>
- Continue to feed your child as recommended by your doctor or public health clinic.
- Your child may need medical help if the diarrhea is more serious than usual or if accompanied by a fever.
You should contact a physician if:
- Diarrhea persists beyond 24 hours
- Diarrhea appears to be worsening
- Diarrhea is accompanied by a persistent fever

Pediatric Electrolyte is a safe and effective method of preventing dehydration in infants and young children.
Pediatric Electrolyte is known medically as an oral electrolyte maintenance solution. Your child drinks it like juice, formula, or milk. It works by replacing lost electrolytes. Pediatric Electrolyte gently re-hydrates, restoring the water and mineral balance in children who may be dehydrated due to diarrhea.
Unlike fruit juice, sports or carbonated drinks, Pediatric Electrolyte has the right balance of carbohydrates and electrolytes to provide precisely what the child needs to replace lost fluids.
And Pediatric Electrolyte offers the right flavours and the right sizes:
- the only brand to offer the popular grape flavour children love in addition to both unflavoured and fruit-flavoured solutions.
- the only brand available in a convenient single serving 248 mL (8 ounce) size.
- perfect for filling baby bottles or for traveling, as well as allowing parents the opportunity to offer their children a variety of flavours within a 24-hour dosing period.
- also available in an economical 1 liter bottle.
Ready to use - no mixing necessary
just pour and serve.
What to avoid:
- Avoid foods and beverages containing a lot of sugar.
- Avoid plain water or fruit juices. These are NOT appropriate for preventing or treating dehydration.
- Avoid milk products and wheat products, which may be difficult to digest.
- Avoid anti-diarrheal agents unless recommended by a physician.
What to do:
- Use Pediatric Electrolyte to prevent dehydration.
- Continue to nurse breast-fed infants as usual.
- Infants who are bottle fed should continue drinking formula diluted to half strength.
- Reintroduce a normal diet gradually. Begin with starchy foods (bread, noodles, rice, potatoes).
- Prevent the spread of the diarrhea by following rules of good basic hygiene: wash your hands on a regular basis.
