The Esquires

The Esquires were formed in the Ottawa Valley in 1962 and played their first show at the Rockcliffe Air Base Teen Club. The band was influenced by the British Invasion bands and had adopted Cliff Richards and the Shadows as their main sound.

Managed by Ottawa Journal columnist Sandy Gardner, they landed prestigious dates with some of the ‘60s biggest rock and roll acts such as The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, The Dave Clark 5 and Roy Orbison. A career highlight was being part of a Dick Clark show at Faucher Stadium with acts such as Gene Pitney, The Dovells, Paul and Paula and The Tymes.

They were signed by Capitol Records and released their first single “Atlantis” in 1963. They followed that up with “The Man From Adano”, and their biggest hit “So Many Other Boys” in 1964. This hit won them a Red Leaf Award (predecessor to the Juno Awards) for Best Vocal and Instrumental Group. Several more singles and an album were released.

Fame was fleeting and they finally disbanded in 1967.

The Staccatos
Formed in 1963, The Staccatos emerged from the Ottawa music scene in the mid-‘60s with their first single of prominence “Small Town Girl”. They launched their next release, “Moved to California”, and in 1966, “Let’s Run Away” won the Juno awards for Best Produced Single and Vocal Instrumental Group of the Year.

They began to receive more notice with gigs in Toronto’s Yorkville Village after the release of the single “Half Past Midnight”, which became a national hit and won another Juno award for Best Produced Single.

Though they received a lot of hype in California from their record label, Capitol U.S., the group was seen as being “too Beach Boy-sounding”, and The Staccatos’ records failed there. They would soon change their name to The Five Man Electrical Band after the title of their second album.

After waiting out their contract with Capitol and signing on with Lion Records, they recorded the album “Goodbyes & Butterflies”, known for its controversial cover art. The first single, “Signs”, went to #3 in the U.S. and #4 in Canada, selling more than two million copies worldwide. (This single was remade in 1990 by the hairspray band Tesla, and was a hit again.). The next single, “Absolutely Right”, went to #3 in Canada and hit the top 20 in the U.S.

By 1973 they were exhausted and pursued solo careers, reforming in 1986, which has led to an annual fun tour of Eastern Canada.
