DANGER - SUN DAMAGE
Having a responsible attitude towards the sun.
Many of you will remember a time when we slathered on the baby oil and rushed to the beach at the first hint of summer sun. Elaborate vacations to the world's "sunspots" were considered a rite of spring, or a winter refuge. The net result of all this sun worship has been an increase in the number of cases and deaths from melanoma or skin cancer. Mole or Melanoma, what is the difference?
Most moles are harmless, also called beauty marks or birth marks, moles normally surface during childhood. Their numbers depend on heredity and sun exposure. They seldom exceed 6mm in diameter and are normally round or oval, flat or embossed(raised). Melanoma on the other hand is very serious. One in 90 North Americans will develop melanoma mostly caused by overexposure to the sun's harmful UV rays in their youth or later. If left untreated, melanoma will rapidly metasticize to the lymph nodes and various organs jeapordizing the patients life. Early detection is as essential to early treatment and a positive outcome.
Here are some warning signs to pay attention to:
- Appearance of a brown spot (a mole imposter) that evolves rapidly and differs from other moles.
- Changes in your existing moles in colour or shape or size.
- Appearance of blood on a mole unattributable to any injury.
You should immediately consult a dermatologist or your doctor at the occurance of any of these warning signs!
Are you at risk?
Anyone can develop melanoma, however you are at greater risk if you meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Previous personal or family history of melanoma
- More than 50 moles
- Moles of widely differing shape and size
- Numerous freckles
- Light-coloured (pale) skin, light coloured eyes
- Susceptability to sunburn
- History of severe childhood sunburns
- Avid suntanning activity
How to perform a self-examination
Eight easy self-examination steps (after removing your clothes):

Your face, including your ears.

Use a hairdryer and a mirror to examine your entire scalp area.

The palms and back of your hands, your fingernails and forarms.

Elbows, arms and armpits.

Neck, chest and stomach (women, carefully examine under your breasts.

Use a hand mirror and a wall mirror to check your shoulders and back.

Your buttocks and the backs of your thighs.
-
While sitting, the front of your thighs, your legs, the tops and soles of your feet, toenails and use a hand-held mirror to check your genital area.
This self-examination should be done two or three times a year.
If you discover numerous moles you should document them with photos for future comparisons. |
